Sunday was so peaceful, at least from my perspective. I spent the day with my BFF (or at least for a grade or two back in the day) and her husband and kids. I don't think it was quite as relaxing for my friends. For parents that don't have a perpetual nanny and a bottle of Valium, I think relaxing days with a toddler in the terrible two's, three's and fours is more of a concept than a reality. I absolutely love children, and I spend lots of time with my friends that have them, but at some point, all of my friends confess that they wonder if they can pull it off, and they all think they are the only ones who worry about losing their patience. So, for everyone out there, yes...you are just like every other parent. Outside of Stepford, it is perfectly normal to not feel a glowing love and adoration for your child when they are throwing a temper tantrum or trying to test boundaries by horrifying you in some way or other. It surprises me that more parents don't talk to each other about that. I am glad I don't have the pressure to be a 24/7 smiling parent on my shoulders. Hang in there, guys and if you ever want to vent or complain...shoot me an email. I don't have kids, but I think I get it.
It is so interesting to see my childhood friend as a parent. We were complete sci-fi geeks before we knew what that meant. She idolized Spock and his emotional discipline, and I idolized Mya from Space 1999 because she was glimmery and gorgeous. I also idolized Mr. Roarke from Fantasy Island. Even though I knew that show was pretend, I still hoped it was based on a true story and I might get a job there someday. I am still holding out for that job, actually. If anyone has any leads, please send them my way juliaorpheus@yahoo.com.
